The deeper the truth in a creative work, the longer it will live.

From Chaplin’s manuscript notes

Modern times by Charlie Chaplin

A silent comedy written and acted by ace actor Charlie Chaplin depicts the life of a normal human being during the beginning of industrial revolution. Whole life routine and cycle changed drastically after the advent of machine in the production process.

Charlie Chaplin played his very famous role of TRAMP for the last time in the movie. The movie premise is made after the fully advent and advancement of industrial revolution, when the whole economy was transforming from agrarian society to industrial society.

The movie begins with the workers entering into the factory for their work to be done as their regular routine. Everyone entered in the same pace as well as tried to reach out to their designated place as fast as they could. After a set time the manager  (head) asked to stat the work simultaneously for all. As we can see that the workers are working as an extension to the machines and the whole production process is divided into small parts as it happens in assembly line production. It is truly said that a repeated task can be exhaustive and we can clearly sate that because of the work pressure and monotonous nature tramp was exhausted and can just focus on the work and finally his condition worsened when he got the fits and metal break –down take place.

This resulted him in the hospital where he was treated well and again left in the world to work for the living. But tragedy never comes with prior information, the sudden riot in town made him look like a leader which resulted him in the jail. The beginning was harsh in jail but later he found a true home in prison where he don’t have to work for anything and can live a peaceful life. The situation can’t always remain same and that’s why tramp’s luck changed when he mistakenly consumed drugs and save the police station from some goons in the drunken state. Later he was rewarded for the same in the form of being released from the mistaken crime that he did along with the consent of higher officer that he can work anywhere he likes. The situation seems to be positive in nature but Tramp was not happy as he was asked to leave the comfort zone that he was enjoying in this phase of life.

On the other hand there was a young girl who became orphan during the riots along with her sisters but the girl escaped the orphanage with some tricks. After releasing from the prison Tramp got work in shipyard but still he can’t focus on work and created multiple blunders.

The girl was trying to steal some food and trap took the blame of hers on him as he clearly wants to be back in prison to live in comfort zone again. Somehow girl was also arrested but they tricked the police and spent some time alone imagining their future in a beautiful house with all luxuries and for this Tramp was also ready to work hard.

Suddenly they saw a place where a night guard was required and Tramp grabbed the opportunity in his favor for the work. But he can’t protect the shop from robbery and end up in prison again for 10 days and this time the girl waited for him desperately to live together and a shelter create by her which doesn’t have any luxury or either the basic amenities but they tried to accommodate. The news appeared for reopening of mill and tramp decided to work there for living but again ended up in jail for his absent minded attitude.

This time the girl take up the role of bread winner and started her work as street artist and later in café as a dancer. Through her hard work she earns well for her living and when Tramp released from prison she got him a job of a singing waiter in the same café where she was working. Tramp’s attitude remains same but this time girl was there to help him out. But later police identified the girl as an declared orphan by police and tried to take her along so both of them escape from there for new livelihood on an unknown journey but together

Through the movie a journey of that time is shown with a lot of hardship where humans are just treated as an extension of machine and are forced t work hard than the capacity. The movie act as a mirror to today’s world as well. :) :)
